KZN Midlands

Shafton Airfield is the main aviation base for all aerial support services provided in the KZN Midlands. There are two satellite airbases located at Riverdale, outside Richmond and Weza, outside Harding.

Subject to weather conditions, the following aircraft will be available for the 2018 fire season: All contracts end on 30 September, 2 SEAT’s, 1 Spotter and the Helicopter, and the balance on 31 October 2018.

Shafton:

  • 4 x Fixed Wing Turbo Thrushes (3 x 500gal & 1 x 400gal)
  • 2 x Cessna 182 Spotter aircraft

Riverdale:

  • 2 x Fixed Wing Turbo Thrushes (2 x 500gal)
  • 1 x Cessna 182 Spotter aircraft

Weza:

  • 1x Helicopter (800 lt Bambi capacity)

  • All dispatch and co-ordination of aircraft is done at the Shafton Operations / Control Room: Contact 033-330 8421

Operational costs

  • Fixed wing aircraft are available to subscribing members on a first and second call basis
  • IMPORTANT: All aircraft are dispatched on caller pays per hour or part thereof.
Midlands 2018 Hourly Flying Rates – Rates will be available pre the 2018 fire season:
  • KZNFPA Spotters:   per hour.
  • Helicopter:  per hour.
  • SEATs:   per hour.
  • Fixed Wing Loads: On departure from Shafton, fixed wing aircraft will normally be carrying a load of water and retardant. For this load, the company concerned will be invoiced an amount of
  • Helicopter Loads:  per load
  • Airfield Activation: When an in-field airstrip (Including Shafton) and it’s loading crew is used, by any member, an activation fee of  will be charged.
  • Retardant Cost: A fee of  will be charged for every load of water and retardant taken from that facility by the fixed wing bombers.

KZN Zululand – Coastal

Fosters Airfield is the main aviation base for all aerial support services provided in the Zululand coastal area.

Subject to weather conditions, the following aircraft are available for the 2018 fire season: All contracts end 31 October 2018.

Kwambonambi:

  • 2 x Fixed Wing Turbo Thrushes (2 x 500gal)
  • 1 x Cessna 182 Spotter aircraft

  • All dispatch and co-ordination of aircraft is done at the Zululand Fire Protection Association Control Room: Contact 035 5804 713.

Operational costs

  • Fixed wing aircraft are available to subscribing members on a first and second call basis

KZN Zululand – Inland

Kataza Airfield, between Melmoth and Babanango, is the main aviation base for all aerial support services provided in the Zululand inland area.

Subject to weather conditions, the following aircraft are available for the 2018 fire season: All contracts end 30 September 2018.

Kataza:

  • 1 x Fixed Wing Turbo Thrush (1 x 500gal)
  • 1 x Robinson 44 Helicopter acts as the Spotter aircraft
